Your start in consulting

...as an intern at Kerkhoff Consulting

Lots of traveling, exciting projects, and new opportunities - consulting is not a profession that stands idle. The project location, the tasks and the colleagues change regularly, often all three parameters at the same time. As an intern, you will experience life as a consultant firsthand. Together with your business unit, you will work on projects and support customers from a wide range of industries. It won't be boring, we promise!

Our colleague reports:

Johannes Kamps studied business administration and has been with us since 2023.

Which projects or tasks did you enjoy the most during your internship and which had the greatest impact on you?

My internship at Kerkhoff gave me the opportunity to gain my first practical experience in management consulting. After completing the onboarding program, I was given the opportunity to work on an implementation project for a retail company operating in the DACH region. The focus of the project was strategic negotiations with the client's suppliers, as well as the development and implementation of an optimized purchasing process.

In particular, the goal-oriented and data-supported approach to identifying potential and deriving measures sparked my interest in long-term employment in consulting.

What skills or insights did you gain during your time as an intern that helped you to successfully transition into a permanent position?

During the internship, I gained extensive experience in developing BI solutions, among other things, which proved to be extremely valuable for data-driven negotiation and decision-making. I also had the opportunity to participate in negotiations with the client's suppliers, which gave me a deeper insight into the world of business negotiations.

These skills were crucial to my successful permanent employment, as they were directly related to the challenges of my current position.

What challenges did you face during your internship?

The internship and the project work in particular presented me with various challenges, which I had to master in the best possible way. The need to analyze complex data and derive recommendations required appropriate analytical skills. Efficient time management and independent prioritization of my tasks were crucial.

Adapting to a dynamic environment and developing innovative solutions strengthened my creative problem-solving skills. Overall, these challenges developed my skills as a budding consultant and deepened my application in practical professional situations.

How did our corporate culture and work environment influence your decision to continue working with us after your internship?

At Kerkhoff, the interaction between employees is very collegial. You support each other in all tasks and can ask questions openly on any topic. In addition, the flat hierarchies ensure that interns feel that they are taken seriously. You are given important tasks and the opportunity to prove yourself by completing these tasks. The trust placed in me strengthened my identification with Kerkhoff and ensured that I saw myself as part of the team as quickly as possible. Kerkhoff also attaches great importance to personal development and the development of specific skills. As part of training courses and other further training measures, you are prepared in the best possible and target-oriented way for everyday consulting work.

The industry requires a high level of specialist knowledge, a willingness to adapt and a proactive approach.
