Kerkhoff Consulting: Düsseldorf-Based Purchasing Consultancy Better Than McKinsey & Others

Düsseldorf, June 21, 2012 - Kerkhoff Consulting is the best purchasing consultancy in Germany. Deciders in the German economic community voted the Düsseldorf-based consultants as number one in the field of "purchasing and procurement" – far ahead of strategic consultancies such as McKinsey and Roland Berger. That's the result of the current study "Hidden Champions des Beratungsmarktes" [Hidden Champions of the Consultancy Market] by Professor Dietmar Fink and the Wissenschaftliche Gesellschaft für Management und Beratung [Scientific Society for Management and Consulting – WGMB]. The business magazine CAPITAL exclusively publishes excerpts from the study on June 21, 2012.

Of those interviewed, 44 percent rated competence in the field of "purchasing and procurement" as "very high", 38 percent as "high". With 412 points, Kerkhoff Consulting thus came in first among the evaluated consultancies: In points, 45 percent ahead of McKinsey (291 points) and about 20 percent ahead of Roland Berger (391 points).

From the point of view of the interviewed enterprises, "implementability" is today the most important characteristic a management consultancy should have. In this discipline as well, Kerkhoff Consulting has been elected number one. Altogether 46 percent of the enterprises rated Kerkhoff Consulting "very good" for its implementability; 27 percent as "good". In the discipline "specialized competence", Kerkhoff Consulting made second place. A total of 92 percent rated Kerkhoff Consulting as "very good" or "good". Clients are highly satisfied with the remuneration system of Kerkhoff Consulting. The purchasing consultants from Düsseldorf also rank first in the "price level" discipline.

Kerkhoff Consulting obtained these grades in an environment of steadily increasing complexities in purchasing and procurement projects. Thus, one-third of the interviewed Kerkhoff clients rates the complexity of completed projects as "very high"; another third as "high". At the same time, 72 percent of those queried indicated a "high" or "very high" pressure to change. Yet, Kerkhoff consultants had always been cautiously handling the clients' employees: According to their information, they had frequently "taken into account all viewpoints", carried on "intensive discussions", endeavored in "mutual rapprochement", and "harmonized divergent standpoints".

"Consultancy projects frequently fail because consultants and the client's staff are unable to communicate at eye level", says Gerd Kerkhoff. "In particular, that's frequently the case in small and medium-sized enterprises: A top-notch academic graduate will come along to tell the trained master craftsperson what needs to be done immediately from now on. In that case, we'll come across as being down-to-earth and authentic, speaking a language in line with the target group. But we are no softy smooth consultants either: We'll put the facts clearly on the table and make suggestions on how to meet and master challenges."

Kerkhoff projects are worth their money: 46 percent of the interviewed clients stated that the projects with Kerkhoff Consulting had been a "total success" in economic results. Another 44 percent rate their success as "high". At the same time, clients also learn a lot in a project: Almost two-thirds say that the "experiences gained" had also been a "total success".

This is the fourth study "Hidden Champions des Beratungsmarktes" by Professor Dietmar Fink (FH Bonn-Rhein-Sieg) and the Wissenschaftliche Gesellschaft für Management und Beratung (WGMB). No one can apply for this study; instead, candidates will be chosen by an external selection process. Objective of the study is to measure the consulting quality of consultancy boutiques versus the major, international consultancies. In 2012, the study awarded a total of 13 "hidden champions". Kerkhoff Consulting is the only purchasing consultancy to win this award once again.
